Emerald Ash Borer: What is it, and What Should I Do?
Posted on Nov 4th, 2013
If you’ve been following the news lately, you have most likely learned that the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle (EAB) has been spotted in both Johnson and Wyandotte Counties.  EAB is an invasive, non-native insect that attacks and kills all species of North American Ash trees, including white, green, and black ash.  EAB is native to Asia and was first detected in the United States in the Summer of 2002 feeding on ash trees in the Detroit, Michigan area.

Symptoms of EAB include canopy dieback, bark splitting, serpentine galleries below the bark, D-shaped exit holes and increased woodpecker activity.

If you have ash trees in your yard, there are options available to you which may include either removing or treating ash trees on your property.  While at this time it does not appear it will be possible to stop the spread of EAB, there are methods for treating trees in order to slow its spread

Each tree and situation is different.  To learn more about EAB and how it may affect you, please contact the K-State Research and Extension at 913-715-7005, visit www.stopthebeetle.info, or contact a licensed, certified arborist
